About the Sexton House

The Sexton House, 32 Wilson Street at Vesper, Munjoy Hill, Portland, Maine
32 Wilson Street at Vesper

32 Wilson Street was built in 1896 — one of the triple-deckers that went up across Munjoy Hill at the turn of the twentieth century to house the neighborhood's growing, largely immigrant population. The City of Portland's historic building survey records it as the John Sexton Apartment House and identifies it as a contributing structure in the Munjoy Hill Historic District.

It stands at the corner of Wilson and Vesper. The survey notes several elements uncommon among its neighbors: a shorter footprint, a large canted projecting bay carrying the windows of the southern elevation, and entrances topped by bracketed hoods. The original brackets carry a star motif.

The building was gut renovated into three residences, with the interiors designed by the owner, a licensed architect. An outdoor patio on the grounds is shared by the three residences.

Residences One and Two share a plan; Residence Three, on the top floor, gains a home office area off the kitchen in the space the interior stair occupies below. Each is delivered fully furnished and equipped. Leases run month to month with a thirty-day minimum, which suits relocation, insurance placement, extended clinical assignments, and academic appointments better than a bare twelve-month term.
